Clinical Rotations
Family Medicine Elective
The Family Medicine Elective is a 4 to 6 week rotation that encompasses the comprehensive and longitudinal care of patients in the ambulatory clinic setting. Students will have the opportunity to experience Family Medicine in a variety of settings at the three clinical campuses (Berkeley Medical Center, Clinica Alianza Latina and Clinica La Trinidad). Students will spend four days (8- 10 hour work days) per week at one of these community sites working intimately with an experienced Board Certified Family Medicine Physician. In addition, one day per week will be spent in lecture series, Clinical Skills/Case-based workshops and/or inpatient clinical care. These opportunities will give students an "up close and personal" glimpse of what Family Medicine has to offer in terms of the care of individuals, families and communities.
Pain Management
During this rotation, medical student works in one of three Pain Management clinical sites alongside board certified Family Medicine, General Surgery and Anesthesiology physicians. The Pain Management sites offer clinical services to patients Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. A variety of cases such as low back and neck pain, myofascial pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), neuropathic pain, cancer pain, post-herpetic neuralgia are evaluated and treated. Our multidisciplinary approach utilizes the many resources at our disposal, including physical and occupational therapy, neurology and neurosurgery, psychiatry and addiction medicine and orthopedic-spine specialist evaluations.
Family Medicine Core
The Family Medicine Core is a 6 week rotation that encompasses the comprehensive and longitudinal care of patients in the ambulatory clinic setting. Students will have the opportunity to experience Family Medicine in a variety of settings at the three clinical campuses (Berkeley Medical Center, Clinica Alianza Latina and Clinica La Trinidad). Urgent Care Elective
This is a 4-to-6-week rotation where students work in one of two ambulatory care centers. The student will provide care for walk-in patients and for patients with urgent concerns. They will work closely with the supervising attendings and is expected to develop skills necessary to provide excellent patient care in the urgent care setting. Students will participate in lab/x- ray reviews with the attending physicians and play an active role in the treatment and management of their patients.
Occupational Medicine
The rotation in Occupational Medicine is a two (2) week or four (4) week experience structured to develop the student’s decision-making cognitive skills and apply didactic material in a clinical setting. Students work in one of two ambulatory care centers caring for the patients seen for pre-employment physical exams, on-the-job injuries, random employment drug screens, Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exams, etc. Students work four 8-hour days per week and attend lecture series/didactic sessions one day per week.
